Recycling municipal wastewater may be the answer to increase the nation’s water security. The chemicals that we will be exposed to through treated water could also be significantly less than what we are already exposed to with our existing water supply. Currently San Diego gets all of its water from the Colorado River and the Sacramento-San Joaquin River delta. Using treated water would take stress away from those two rivers, which are now vulnerable to water shortages. Although the cost would be similar to the cost of desalinization (very expensive) it may be well worth it to take stress off the drying out rivers.
