Over the past decade, automobile and fossil fuel corporations have promoted the falseness of the science behind global warming. General Motors has finally stopped supporting the free-market think tank Heartland for climate change skeptics. It has questioned the science behind global warming with newsletters, a website, and conference taglines like “Global Warming: Was It Ever Really a Crisis?” from last year.
With this decision came much applause from climate change activist groups such as 350.org and Forecast the Facts, which encourages scientists to disclose important scientific information on climate change. The president of Heartland Institute believes it is a shame that GM would side with liberal advocacy groups which attack those “who question the theory of man-made global warming and corporations and foundations that are willing to fund open debate on this important public policy issue.” GM is not the first automobile organization to do this; Ford and Chrysler made the decision to cut funding to Heartland this past decade. Though these car companies intentions were never detailed, Greenpeace’s research director believes that “GM doesn’t want to be associated with this kind of nonsense on climate change, which is great.” Hopefully other companies will follow in this path.
