Rozalia Project

8 – Water/ Ocean Pollution

Daniella Almanza

Water pollution is a global issue. It doesn’t matter what continent you are on, there will always a problem with ocean pollution if the population does not step in to help. One individual that stepped in is sailor Rachel Miller. Miller and her partner James Lyne founded the Rozalia Project. They travel together and visit community sailing centers, maritime museums, and different yacht clubs on the East Coast. On their boat, they have a remote controlled underwater vehicle that can go down to about 1,000 feet. It is called a VideoRay ROV. While it is down under the water, the robot is equipped with imaging sonar, a trash-grabbing arm, and a video camera so that the people may be able to see what trash lies below the ocean’s surface.

This is a very effective way of teaching the population about what is going on in the world because it is a hands-on activity. “Most people only see this technology on TV, used by scientists. We put it in the hands of kids out for summer sailing classes, at-risk youth, and families interested in the environment” says Miller. She also says that “…it is so important to realize that there isn’t such a thing as out of sight out of mind. It may be out of sight, but it is there!” She is 100% correct.
