Close to Shore, Humpbacks Are Far From Safe

The Stellwagen sanctuary is a habitat for a type of fish known as the sandlance. It has many predators including humpback whales, fin whales, mink whales, dolphins, striped bass and bluefin tuna. Unfortunately, this sanctuary is not too far from land so many people use it.

During the day, many different types of boats can be spotting fishing here. Humpbacks are killed by humans mainly because they are either hit by ships or because they get entangled in the fishing gear. Dr. Wiley is collecting data to help influence a policy to protect the whales. Hopefully, by using new technologies we can learn enough about the whales to help protect them.
