Fire in Spain’s Canary Islands forces La Gomera exodus

Fires on the Canary Islands have been spreading rapidly, destroying hundreds of acres of land and displacing thousands. Experts believe that this relentless wildfire may have been caused by the recent dry winter — the driest in 70 years — in tandem with the temperature soaring to 104F. Officials say that it will take over three decades for the burnt areas to recover. Luckily, casualties are low despite the destructiveness of the fires and firefighters are beginning to control the flames on some islands.
