Plant Genebanks: Food Security

Renee Dobrinsky
Chapter 9: Gene banks

Seeds are stored in Genebanks in several different ways. Gene banksstore living samples that range from “massive collections stored in elaborate buildings to a simple field of a few labeled plants”. In the Philippines there is over 100,000 types of rice being stored and in Sarawalk, Borneo they are storing locally important fruit trees. There are currently 1,460 genebanks worldwide containing 5.4 million samples. There are some complications. For example, it is hard to store plants that do not produce a seed. the seeds of the plants could last up to centuries but in order to provide fresh seeds, the seeds are planted and gorwn out every few years. Gene banks conserve crop diversity that are under threat.
