Production of Gold has many Negative Envirnomental Effects

Today, gold comes from open-pit mines. In the mines, rocks are churned to extract tiny flecks of metal. This requires a lot of energy and can cause toxic mine drainage (example creates runoff that polutes water). Also, it sends a lot of Mercury into teh atmosphere. New pollution technologies are helping with this issue. The extraction process ends in dousing the ore into cyanide which is extremely lethal. Cyanide, goes a way while mercury stays forever. The biproducts contmainate  groundwater. When you buy gold, it is hard to tell if it is responsibly produced. The best thing you can do, is each time ou buy a piece of gold, sell a piece of gold to be melted down and reused so more doesn’t have to be mined.
