U.N. Aims to End Child Deaths From Pneumonia, Severe Diarrhea

The United Nations is considering a ten year plan to drastically reduce child deaths caused by pneumonia and severe diarrhea. The plan would cost upwards of six billion dollars and aims to take the current 20 child deaths per thousand live births down to four deaths per thousand live births by 2025 and virtually zero by 2035. Officials from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) say that “Children are dying because services are provided piecemeal and those most at risk are not being reached.” This is an extremely ambitious goal, but the UN is confident it will be accomplished.
