Goodbye, government: shutdown affects science, the environment, and health

As of September 30th at midnight government shut down. Unfortunately the most affected departments are that of Science and Environmental Protection. Over ninety percent of NASA was shut down, (17,701 out of 18,250 total employees) and According to president Obama “NASA will shut down almost entirely, but Mission Control will remain open to support the astronauts serving on the Space Station.” The second most affected department, unfortunately was the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), also with over ninety percent shut down. Only 1,069 of the 16,200 employees (6.5 percent) are continuing to work. In case of an environmental disaster there will still be a skeleton crew on the job as well as lawyers for any cases and prosecutions in process.
