Manatees Swimming to Saftey

Nico Balarezo:

In 1972, the manatee was considered endangered. At this time, there were only 1,276 counted. Luckily, The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service have finally declared the manatee population as “threatened” and now they are no longer endangered. Now there are a little over 6,300 manatees! This is a 500% increase in population. Unfortunately, We cant just be happy about this and keep on living our lives like their population wont go down anymore. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife service said that they are, “happy with the status quo, but the threat is still out there, and it’s not going away”. Most of these manatees decreasing in population are due to us and our boats. Most boaters disregard the “slow down for manatees” sign or some manatees wander off into unprotected zones where they are easily hit and killed.  In my opinion, this is fantastic news because manatees are extremely peaceful animals who are extremely calm and friendly. They place no harm on us yet we destroy their population. The step of going from endangered to threatened is just a small step. They are still threatened which is not good. We can always work together to stop this and make them no longer threatened or endangered.
