For a vast amount of time, there was a misconception that roofs would have to be repaired in order to be able to withstand the weight of solar panels. However, scientists have come to the conclusion that most well-built roofs nowadays are able to carry on these solar panels.
Sandia, a researcher, took on the job of analyzing the strength of rooftops that have been the concern of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Solar American Cities program. One city that she studied reported that the reason why many people have not applied solar panels to their roofs is because there is problems with the costs of obtaining permits for applying solar panels to roofs. When the Sandia heard this, she was appalled that this was the main barrier. She said, “Solar PV systems represent little additional weight and roofs are very strong.”
So after this study, they came to realize that the code officials are not familiar with solar technology and do not have the training to know how the PV solar would affect roof structure. Therefore, they realized that this major issue needs to be confronted.
