A recent study discovered that exposure to air pollution could lead to heart disease. The study was over a decade long and showed that Americans residing in urban areas with more outdoor pollution than normal causes deposits to build up in the major arteries that supply blood to the heart. The exact biological process is still being studied and has not been explained completely. Even at levels of air pollution slightly over the standards it has been found that the hardening of arteries or atherosclerosis occurs faster and earlier. This is the cause of heart attacks.
The leader of the study stated, “The study provides important new information on how pollution affects the main biological process that leads to heart disease,” said Dr. Joel Kaufman I believe this finding should further promote the reduction of air pollution, because it is not only harmful to our planet but to our health.
